I Heard What You Said....

I can not believe that we are 2 weeks away from the end of the 2008-2009 school year. In summary, it was HELL. Man-child started off eager to finish the year and plan for high School. By October, the excitement was gone. I started my Mantra... "The grade you get now will have an impact on the high school you select. Keep your grades up". I must have said this everyday - did he listen - NO!!! In Thanksgiving, a student was killed at a school that is located next door to his school. Man-child shut down. He refused to do any school and refused to go to school for 4 days. Well... I began calling everyone, seeking help, counseling, therapy.. you name it, I took advantage of it. His response -"Just leave me ALONE". SIGH January brought a new attitude, but some spitefulness and I am still repeating my Mantra to him. By February, my brother and his family moved in (you'll have to revisit previous blogs from February) - OH BOY!!! Talk about DRAMA and FAMILY DRAMA at that.... I am still repeating my Mantra and seeking any type of help. By spring break, all of the top high school that he wanted to attend did not accept him because of his mediocre grades. DOUBLE SIGH At this point, I am praying 'cause I know now that somewhere I lost focused. PRAY ......PRAY.....PRAY

In the midst of all this drama, his principal calls me and says, "Man-child is extremely bright and I have to agree that maybe our school was not a challenge for him". I'm like -DUH!!!! He continued and stated that despite his grades, (and they were bad), Man-child scored in the top 5 percentile of all B'more city in the standardized test. He also qualified and passed with a score of 82% on the High School assessment test for Algebra I and English I. DUH again...

So, what does all of this mean? Man-child will be promoted to High School and it will be a school of my choice. He will also be place in an advance placement courses. When we sat down and went through everything that happened this year - his attitude, grades, etc. , he said "I heard what You said, I just wasn't listen"

When am I ever going to learn?!! Sigh

  1. 'Cilla, I don't think you lost focus. I think the teenage years make parents think they're the crazy ones. They're not. Stay strong, Sis. You're doing a phenomenal job.

And, after he accepts his Nobel Prize, you're going to get a great dinner. :)

    Huge hugs!

  3. Cilla thank God for a supportive administrative...but sis don't be too hard on yourself...remember Let Go and Let God...at the end of the day kids will be kids. But gurl I don't know about you but when I was growing up my parents/grandmother weren't on me about doing well. I did well because I wanted to...sometimes I wonder about our kids...it seems like we have to stay on them 24/7 to get it...so at the end of the day what happens when we're no longer around...then what?

  4. Blessings all around, for you, your son and the school administration. Despite all the drama, man-child brain power pulled him through. He should be proud. Mamma Cilla you are doing a great job. Keep on him, I don't care how much he try to push you away. It will be worth it in the long run. I know... Been there done it..
Much luv to you and man-child.

  5. Thanks everyone...

Yasmin, like you I did well in school because I wanted to do well. Now, kids will not work unless they have an incentive. That is not how it works in the real world... All in all, I have to learn to stop kicking myself so much and just have FAITH!!!

  6. Cilla -
Glad that he will be going to the a HS that will challenge him and he will succeed!

Children will rise to the bar set for them - so being at school and with other kids where the bar is higher - they strive for it.

    Take care

  7. Oh 'Cilla the woes of a mother. Honey keep doing what you are doing. If you had lost focus you wouldn't have heard such great news from the principal. It's just the teenage years.I am gearing up for it, because my oldest turns 13 in September.

  8. Cilla, Man-Child is going to be all right because he has you as a mom. When we think our kids aren't listening, they really are. One day when he has children, your words are going to come back to haunt me as he speak those same words to his little crew! And you'll be able to stand back and say, "Hmm-hmm." LOL
